A photograph is worth a thousand words—and sometimes, it can speak even louder than that. Photography, especially in the digital age, holds the power to challenge perceptions, capture hidden realities, and tell stories words often cannot express. As Susan Sontag once wrote, “To photograph is to appropriate the thing photographed… it feels like knowledge, and therefore like power.”
Dr. Anamika Ray Memorial Trust (ARMT) brings this idea to life with the PIONEER Photo Contest—Photographic Images of North East: Exploring Reality—a visual storytelling initiative open to photographers of all levels. In a time where mainstream images of North-East India often focus on conflict or unrest, this contest seeks to reveal the region’s real identity: its untouched forests, rich cultures, majestic landscapes, vibrant people, and untold stories.
Photography, as a form of visual communication, can open new perspectives. Just as Kevin Carter’s iconic image once shook the conscience of the world, images from this contest aim to highlight the diverse realities and truths of the North-East—its challenges, beauty, traditions, and resilience.
PIONEER is a platform for photographers to help redefine and reframe the region through compelling visuals. With its deep-rooted commitment to service and social development, ARMT envisions this initiative as a subaltern voice from the region—an authentic portrayal of its identity, transcending language barriers and asserting its true image to the world.
